My HealtheVet recently launched a new feature to help Veterans manage their health care. With the Department of Veteran Affairs (VA) Blue Button, Veterans can view, print, and download their My HealtheVet personal health information to save to a computer or external device. Then they can choose to share their information with their health care teams, caregivers, or others.
VA sees many benefits resulting from the new Blue Button feature. Sharing personal health information with others involved in their health care will help VA patients become active partners with their health care teams. This can lead to better care coordination and use of time. It can also result in potential increased satisfaction with health care services and improved patient safety. Using the Blue Button feature is easy. All that is needed is a computer with Internet access. Veterans who are registered users of My HealtheVet can log on to the website and select the Blue Button. For Veterans who have completed the In-Person Authentication process, in addition to their My HealtheVet personal health information, they also have access to their VA prescription history and VA Wellness Reminders.
It is important that Veterans safeguard their information. Veterans are responsible for protecting any of their personal health information that they print out or download. They should treat their My HealtheVet information the same way they protect banking or credit card information.
